26 July 2021 - Utility Warehouse is focused on helping customers forget about their utility bills and focus on the more important things in their lives. That’s why we want to do as much as we can to enable our customers to do this. And that’s why we’ve been encouraging as many of our customers as possible to get a smart meter installed.

Even though the pandemic may have made things more difficult, as a business, we’ve been doing everything we can to provide as many smart meters to our customers as possible. And we’re delighted to say that we have hit a huge milestone on our smart meter journey. We’ve reached 60% of our energy customers having installed a smart meter. An incredible achievement.

While most other suppliers rely on a third party engineering team, we can ensure a great customer experience through our own Home Services team. The UWHS team was created following our work with several others across the industry so that we could better meet our customer needs and ensure we were hitting our own high standards when it came to appointments and the Smart Meter Installation Code of Practice.

Benefits of having a smart meter

Smart meters present a multitude of benefits to customers. Previously, your energy consumption was often not clear. But smart meters now allow customers to track their usage in real time. This means that customers can understand their energy use better, so they can take steps to use less and save money, and any spikes or jumps in usage can be spotted immediately. It can also help you spot faulty appliances. If you spot a sudden spike in usage, this could be down to an appliance malfunctioning and you can promptly spot the issue and shut it down before it gets out of hand.

They also provide communication with your energy supplier. We know that providing a meter reading can be an often arduous task or something that can often be forgotten about altogether. Smart meters provide a feedback loop to suppliers that means meter readings are automatically submitted and bills are accurate every month. This means no more estimated bills and customers paying for exactly what they use.

Smart meters are also excellent for the world around you. As well as helping customers consume less energy, they also benefit the electricity grid. By providing timely updates, it helps build a more accurate view of exactly what energy is being used and where. And this helps suppliers to buy and sell the right amounts of energy and this helps drive down overall cost for consumers. And they help us bring forward new technology, like remote top ups for prepayment meters and support for electric vehicles.

How you can get a smart meter?

Though we may have reached 60% smart meters, we don’t want to stop here. We want as many of our customers as possible to get a smart meter installed so that they can stop worrying about meter readings and their bills, and start allowing the smart meter to do this for them. We don’t charge customers for these meters, we provide them to our customers free of charge. We can install them when it suits you and give handy tailored advice about how to use less energy. Existing customers can upgrade to a smart meter online.
