Warm Home Discount scheme

The Warm Home Discount scheme is a Government led programme offering support to households who are in, or at risk of, fuel poverty.

The Government and Ofgem make the decisions on how much you’ll get and who qualifies. It is energy suppliers, like UW, that fund the scheme.

Please note: There are changes for the 2022/23 scheme year. The Warm Home Discount now works differently depending on which country you live in.

The payment for this year is £150.

What to expect?

England & Wales

If you live in England or Wales and you’re eligible for the payment, you don’t need to make an application.

The Government will write to you between November 2022 and January 2023 advising if you qualify for the Core Group 1 or Core Group 2 credit. The letter will also advise what you need to do next to receive the discount.

There is no Broader Group this year. It has been replaced by the Core Group 2.

Scotland

If you live in Scotland, the Warm Home Discount will work in the same way as in previous years.

If you were receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit on 21 August 2022, and you or your partner (or Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Appointee, if you have one) were named on your energy account, you’ll be eligible under the Core Group.

Applications for the Broader Group have now closed. If you have any queries, please call our customer service team on 0333 777 0777.

How the scheme has changed

Customers in England and Wales

In previous years the scheme fell into two groups:

Core Group

In previous years, this group included customers who were in receipt of the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.

For the 2022/23 scheme:

  • The Core Group has been renamed Core Group 1 and it still works in the same way.

  • The Government works out which customers should receive the Warm Home Discount payment, and they advise suppliers to make the payment to them.

  • You’ll need to have been receiving qualifying benefits on the qualification date of 21 August 2022.

  • A full explanation of the qualification process will be available on the Government website: Warm Home Discount Scheme.

Broader Group

This group has now been replaced with Core Group 2.

For the 2022/23 scheme:

  • Customers no longer need to apply.

  • The scheme works in the same way as Core Group 1 but with different criteria. Full details will be available on the Government website: Warm Home Discount Scheme.

  • The Government works out which customers should receive this payment, and they advise suppliers to make the payment to them.

  • If you disagree with the Government’s decision, please head to the Warm Home Discount Scheme website and contact them with your query. We’re unable to overrule their decision.
