21 April 2021 - Smart meters are all the rage at the moment and the energy industry is doing what they can to get as many smart meters into homes as possible.
At Utility Warehouse, we think smart meters are a great idea and have so many benefits to the customer. Here’s why:
Gone are the days of estimated bills and meter readings. Smart meters automatically inform suppliers of their customers' usage, meaning we don’t need to take manual readings or send engineers round to check meters. It’s automatically sent to us and customers can be sure they are just paying for their usage and nothing else.
Whereas previously, seeing what was causing energy usage spikes was nearly impossible, smart meters give a real time view on usage. This means you can literally turn an appliance on and see how much energy that may be using. Managing your usage in real time is an effective way to keep tabs on your bills and keep on top of what you’re spending.
Prepayment customers can sometimes be left behind when the energy industry advances but smart meters are something prepayment customers can take advantage of. For prepayment customers, knowing how much energy you have left on your meter is crucial and the displays on smart meters will show how much credit you have left. And now, with smart technology, you can top-up your balance from your phone or your computer. No more having to traipse down to a paypoint. You can add credit easily and be sure you’re never in danger of running out of credit at any time.
One of UW’s priorities is to free up our customers time to focus on things that are more important, and exciting, than utilities. Smart meters help us reach our goal. Customers no longer have to worry about submitting meter readings and information to us. We can just take it automatically through their meter. No more meter reading, no more trying to find your meter in the dark.
As the energy industry attempts to make itself cleaner, more modern, smart meters support this modernisation. As Britain moves toward a smart grid, utilising new technologies and new ways to deliver energy, smart meters will sit at the centre of this. Two way communication between consumers and the energy grid will allow smarter, real-time responses to energy demand.
